SIAPEC-Mayo Clinic Scholarship
In memory of Giulio Rossi: a legacy for the pathologists of tomorrow
The SIAPEC scholarship “In memory of Giulio Rossi: a legacy for the pathologists of tomorrow” (hereafter referred to as the scholarship) funds the training of a young pathologist who wishes to study pleuropulmonary pathology for two months at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology of the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, under the mentorship of Prof. Henry Tazelaar and his associates. The timeline will need to be agreed upon with Prof. Henry Tazelaar and is likely to be in the Spring-Summer 2026 period, depending on the availability of the Mayo Clinic.
Objectives of the scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded based on a study project focusing on the following topics: etiology, epidemiology, prevention, histological diagnosis, biomolecular alterations, treatment, and all other aspects of pleuropulmonary pathology.
Project activities should involve Prof. Henry Tazelaar and his collaborators, take place during the time at the Mayo Clinic, and, if necessary, conclude at the applicant’s workplace.
Applicant eligibility: education and experience
The fellowship is open to Italian applicants.
By the application deadline, the applicant must meet all of the following requirements:
- hold a degree in Medicine and Surgery;
- being specialized in surgical pathology and being under 45 years of age;
- be a member of SIAPEC and maintain good standing by paying the participation fee, which must be submitted before the call deadline and will remain effective until the end of the fellowship.
Grant
The SIAPEC scholarship is valued at €10,000 and will receive additional support from a Mayo Clinic contribution.
SIAPEC funds are disbursed in a single lump sum directly to the institution where the pathologist is employed, benefiting the individual recipient. At the recipient’s discretion, these funds may be utilized for any expenses necessary to support the scholarship. Funds cannot be allocated for indirect costs, institutional overhead, or the purchase of permanent equipment.
Mayo Clinic will directly cover travel and lodging expenses, up to a maximum of $7,500, without transferring funds.
How to apply
The application must include:
- a statement confirming that the candidate meets the above requirements.
- curriculum vitae (publications and past or ongoing participation in research projects)
- a motivational letter with a brief description of the desired study project (in English).
- two letters of recommendation from mentors (in English and on letterhead) confirming the candidate’s track record and demonstrating that the applicant is qualified to perform the tasks required for the proposed project.
Review and evaluation of applications
Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of Prof. Henry Tazelaar and/or his collaborators, as well as a SIAPEC and/or GIPP committee.
Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Candidate’s curriculum vitae
- Candidate’s motivational letter
- Oral interview with the committee
